Pregnancy & Baby

EATING WELL

A healthy diet is always important but especially so if pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant – this will help your baby develop & grow whilst keeping you fit & well

You don’t need to go on a special diet but eating a variety of different foods daily helps you & your baby get the correct balance of nutrients

The best way to get the right vitamins & minerals is via foods but when pregnant you need to take some supplements as well  -  also some foods should be avoided

You will probably find you  are more hungry but you don’t need to ‘eat for two’  -  having a healthy breakfast every day will help to stop you snacking on unhealthy foods

You will need to be very careful with diet if you develop gestational diabetes

5-a-day: Aim to eat at least 5 portions of fruit & veg a day  to provide vitamins & minerals as well as fibre to help digestion & constipation  – these can be fresh, frozen canned dried or juiced.  Always wash them carefully:  cook veg lightly, steam or eat raw to retain the nutrients & health benefits

Snacks: Try to replace unhealthy snacks between meals with healthy options
